Missionary to Speak at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

Doris Puckett-Martin, longtime missionary to the Totonac Indians of Mexico’s Sierra Madre

mountains, will be the guest speaker Thursday evening, July 14, 7 pm, at Prince of Peace

Lutheran Church, 18th & Michigan, Sturgeon Bay. A reception in her honor will be held at 6 pm.

The program is open to all. A freewill offering will be dedicated to the ongoing mission work of

the Philadelphia Bible University, Doris’ alma mater.

Doris and her husband Larry spent more than 40 years among people who believed in

witchcraft and superstition. As newlyweds they built their own very basic house. It had no

running water or electricity or plumbing. There were no phones or tvs or radios or

computers or music or theaters or cars. The closest medical assistance was 14 hours away

over rugged trails.

Poverty was everywhere. There was the language barrier. How do you raise children in a

place like this? How do you obtain food, drink, clothes, shelter? How do you teach your own

children and others without books, paper, pencils, even a chalkboard?

If you would like to hear the answers to these questions, be sure to mark your

calendar for July 14 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 18th & Michigan

streets, Sturgeon Bay. Doris, author of In the Hollow of His Hand, will share her

story of love and devotion in a remote area of Mexico.
