Moonglow Trio on Stage at TAP

Moonglow, a talented trio comprised of singers Mary Launder, Julia Maish and Diane Compton, will perform at Third Avenue Playhouse on Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 pm. The singers not only recreate the unique sound of the Boswell Sisters, they infuse the harmonies with their own winning personalities and presence.

One of the all-time greatest jazz vocal groups, the Boswell Sisters began their career in the vaudeville houses of New Orleans. The sisters’ harmonic vocals, dotted with scatting and numerous tempo and key changes, quickly made them popular in New Orleans and beyond. Between 1930 and 1936, they were the hottest vocal group in the country. Many of their hit recordings were made with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra. Popular tittles included “Cheek to Cheek,” “Everybody Loves My Baby,” “Forty-Second Street,” “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” and “Shine On, Harvest Moon.”

Filtered through Moonglow’s modern sensibility, these songs with their unusual crossover harmonies sound both authentic and refreshingly new. The repertoire includes music by Harry Warren, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and even Morey Amsterdam.

For the concert at TAP, the group will be accompanied by guitarist George Sawyn. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students.
