More than 2,000 finely tuned athletes will hit the shore of Frank Murphy County Park in Egg Harbor this weekend for the 15th Door County Triathlon.
The event will kick off Saturday with the sold-out Sprint Triathlon at 8 am. Participants will take on a .25-mile swim, 18-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. A thousand participants are signed up for the sprint distance.
Following that on Saturday, the youngsters will compete in the Kids Triathlon, 2-5 pm. Competitors between the ages of six and 14 will take on a short open-water swim, bike and run of distances that vary by age group. Kid competitors will get a race shirt, the same big finish as the adults, and an ice cream sundae to celebrate. More than 300 youth are expected to take part.
On Sunday, the top athletes will hit the beach for the daunting half-iron distance: a 1.25-mile open-water swim, 56.3-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run that includes climbs up Harbor Heights Road and Bluff Pass in Egg Harbor.
The first competitors will hit the water at 8 am, and the final finishers cross eight and a half hours later, at 5:30 pm.
The event will slow traffic on County Road G from Bluff Pass to George Pinney County Park on Saturday morning, and from Horseshoe Bay Farms to Monument Point Road Saturday afternoon for the Kids Triathlon. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area unless getting to or from homes or businesses along the route.
On Sunday, the bike course will affect traffic on Third Avenue through downtown Sturgeon Bay from 8:30 to 11 am, and on various rural roads in Sevastopol and Egg Harbor until 2 pm. The run course will take competitors down County Road G to Whitecliff Road before returning through the Village of Egg Harbor and back down County G.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid County Road G from the Egg Harbor beach to Monument Point Road until the evening unless getting to or from homes or businesses. Access will be severely limited throughout the day.
