Mosaicist Exhibit

“Rooster” by Joseph Kaftan.

An exhibit of glass mosaics depicting scenes from throughout Door County opened Aug. 16 and will run through Oct. 15 at Base Camp Coffee Bar in Sister Bay. Mosaicist Joseph Kaftan works from Door County and Seattle. He has previously exhibited in the “Northwest Mosaic Today” group exhibit in Tacoma, Washington, the Ballard Landmark in Seattle, Washington, and this summer’s Juried Exhibition at the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim.

A trained graphic artist and outdoorsman who has had stories of outdoor adventures published in Sea Kayaker Magazine and the Peninsula Pulse, Kaftan’s series focuses on water and landscape scenes, as well as images of fish and birds that play with the traditions of naturalist representation. He works in cut stained glass, as well as Italian and Mexican Smalti tiles.

“My interest in art has always been fueled by the subtlety and beauty of colored light,” says Kaftan. “Glass lends a special sense of presence to nature scenes and still lives, and helps me capture what’s iconic and eternal in things we see every day.”

Base Camp Coffee Bar, located at 10904 Highway 42, is open daily 7:30 am to 3 pm. For more information call 920.854.7894, email [email protected], or visit facebook.com/EcologySports. For more information about Joseph Kaftan visit josephkaftan.com.
