Moving Colors

“Spring Bouquet” by Mary Johnson.

Mary Johnson will be the featured artist of the week at Cottage Row Gallery, August 17 – 23. There will be a “meet the artist” reception on Aug. 20 from 1 – 3 pm.

Johnson first came to Door County in 1940 to a cottage with no electricity or plumbing. A native of Illinois, she moved to Arizona after graduating from Northwestern University. For years she painted desert and mountain landscapes as well as local flowers.

Johnson lives in Phoenix, but is a summer resident of Sister Bay. Now her oil paintings generally reflect her love of Door County, its water, trees, and flowers. A good play of colors is Johnson’s primary objective.

“I like strong colors that move around the canvas. I use a lot of white because it keeps the painting clean and light, colors play well against it. Flowers seem to appear most frequently on my canvas, but I’ve been known to include people, pigs and pastures.”

Cottage Row Gallery is located at 9197 Hwy 42, 1/2 mile south of Fish Creek in the big red barn at Orchard Country Winery. The gallery is open daily 10 am – 5 pm and Sundays 10 am – 4 pm. For more information call 920.868.2626 or visit cottagerowgallerydc.com.
