City of Sturgeon Bay: A special meeting of the Common Council that was called for the afternoon of Sept. 22 to approve financing for the controversial Sawyer Hotel Development and consider a resolution authorizing the sale of the property to Sawyer Hotel Development LLC was postponed by Mayor Thad Birmingham just minutes after it was to start. The unconditional note of financial support that the hotel developer needed to proceed had conditions placed on it by Baylake Bank. One of those conditions was resolution of the lawsuit against the city and its Waterfront Redevelopment Authority that was filed in federal district court in Green Bay last week by water law specialists Wheeler, Van Sickle & Anderson, who are representing Friends of the Sturgeon Bay Public Waterfront. The Friends group maintains that at least two-thirds of the proposed hotel would sit on filled lakebed, which under the state Constitution is public land.
