Mural Created at Newport Visitors’ Center

Newport Wilderness Society volunteer Alison Whitney has completed a new mural – her first mural project – inside the Newport State Park visitors’ center. The society provided funds for the materials, and Whitney donated more than 200 hours to design and create the mural.

The completed mural includes local fauna. Photo by Deb Ford.

To complete it, the workspace was cleared of its original exhibit; the walls were primed; and the initial idea was sketched in February. During the two months that followed, the depiction of a boreal forest, escarpment geology and a forest trail filtered through morning sunlight evolved. Park naturalist Beth Bartoli reinstalled some of the park fauna that had previously been exhibited in the space after it was complete on April 22.

Before visiting the mural, call the Newport State Park office at 920.854.2500 to confirm the hours for the visitors’ center.
