Music Amongst the Shelves

Untitled Books is more than a unique treasure trove of used books and miscellaneous oddities – it has become a very popular Sturgeon Bay live music listening room. Songwriters from Holiday Music Motel’s collaboration events are often featured at Untitled, and this is how Susan Howe came to join forces with local musician Kory Murphy. The two singer-songwriters heard each other perform at a Steel Bridge Songfest event this year at Untitled, and soon hatched a plan to work together. They will be in concert at Untitled on July 26 at 8 pm.

In addition to songwriting and touring, Murphy has been busy amassing high quality recording gear. His musical talent, technical savvy, patience and finesse render him a highly skillful recording engineer/producer. He has devoted weeks of sleepless nights to recording and mixing Howe’s songs, with occasional help from other musicians such as Eric McFadden and John Hvezda.

Fans of Howe’s voice and songwriting have waited ten years for the follow-up to her 2004 Americana album Lonesome Water, and they are about to be rewarded for their patience. The album is due out in early fall, but for this special event a limited edition EP will be on sale. Drawing on more local talent – for original art and silk-screening – each EP will be handmade and contain some songs that will not be included in the upcoming full-length cd.

The event is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Untitled Used and Rare Books is located at 20 N 3rd Ave, Sturgeon Bay. For more information call 920.746.3171.
