Nature Journaling Classes at Newport State Park

Newport Wilderness Society is a recipient of a 2013 Friends of Wisconsin State Parks Affinity Card Grant to offer Nature Journaling classes at Newport State Park this summer.

Ten sessions will be offered dealing with fossils, ferns, badger holes, bugs, birds, butterflies/caterpillars, wildflowers, ground pine, invasive plants and squirrel middens.

The following active or retired Gibraltar teachers will be involved with this project: Mike Scoville, Lauren Bremer and/or Nancy Akerly. Also, the following members of Newport Wilderness Society will assist as resource individuals: Bob Judd, Dick Smythe, Marilyn Hansotia and Jack Travis.

The class schedule is:

• July 29, 1 – 4 pm, Fossils at Lot 3

• July 31, 9 am – 12 pm, Ferns at Lot 3

• Aug. 2, 1 – 4 pm, Badger Holes at Nature Center

• Aug. 5 & 6, 9 am – 12 pm, Bugs at Nature Center

• Aug. 7, 9 am – 12 pm, Butterflies/Caterpillars at Nature Center

• Aug. 15, 1 – 4 pm, Wildflowers at Nature Center

• Aug. 19, 9 am – 12 pm, Ground Pine at Lot 3

• Aug. 21, 9 am – 12 pm, Invasive Plants at Nature Center

• Aug. 23, 9 am – 12 pm, Squirrel Middens at Nature Center

These classes are designed for individuals who will be starting fourth grade this year or older. If an individual will be starting third grade, they are also welcome accompanied by a parent. Adults are also welcome to participate.

There is no cost for enrolling. Participants should bring a water bottle and bug spray and wear good walking shoes, long pants and a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt. Each participant will be provided with a journal and pencil.
