Nature, Modernity and Self

Moheb Soliman

The Door County Maritime Museum and Write On, Door County partner to present a special presentation by performance poet Moheb Soliman on June 24, 7 pm, in the Reddin Room, Door County Maritime Museum, 120 N. Madison Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. Soliman will talk about circling the entire coast of the Great Lakes by land for a writing and performance project from which he’ll also present poems and images. His project deals with nature, modernity, and self; imagining this US/Canadian borderland as a natural/cultural whole; and how “place” makes identity, among other themes. The program is free and open to the public.

Soliman is a writer, educator, and performance artist. Born in Egypt, he has lived in Oklahoma, Ohio, Montreal, Toronto, New York, and Minneapolis. He studied creative writing at the New School and earned a master’s degree at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. His show, Habib Albi is…Not a Man, appeared in venues such as the Bowery Poetry Club and Nuyorican Poets Café in New York City, A Space and XPACE in Toronto, and at MAI and Eastern Bloc in Montreal. A Great Lakes Vista was performed at Pillsbury House Theatre in Minneapolis. Soliman has published work in Three Plum Review, Mizna, and with Buffalo Runs Press. He has been awarded residencies at Hill House, Vermont Studio Center, Salem Art Works, and Banff Centre. He is currently a writer-in-residency at Write On, Door County.
