New Artwork Featured in Edgewood Orchard Galleries’ Exhibit IV

“Weborg Clearing” by Frederick Somers.

Edgewood Orchard’s Exhibit IV, running August 22 through September 22, will feature a collection of all new artwork from five artists, including clay artist Judith Meyers Altobel, painters Susan Hale, Gretchen Klug and Frederick Somers and jeweler Ed Levin. A reception to meet the artists is planned for Saturday, September 5, 4 – 7 pm.

Clay artist Judith Meyers Altobel from St. Paul, Minn. has developed a strong following at Edgewood Orchard Galleries for her large figurative clay pieces. She experiments with forms, surfaces and glazing techniques to create pieces that both reflect the history of ceramics and are metaphors for social and political ideas.

Painter Susan Hale from Cedarburg has created a colorful collection of paintings for this exhibit that blend images she captured in her sketchbook during a 192-mile hike across England last year along with her Door County and Wisconsin roots. “I always travel with a sketchbook and colored pencils…I try to capture the essence of the moment with a drawing and notes.”

In only her second season at Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Door County painter Gretchen Klug has quickly developed a large audience for her work. She creates her sought after oil paintings by starting with a thin layer of paint to establish the composition which she then covers with a heavy layer of oil paint using a palette knife. Klug will be sharing more details about her painting process during her painting demonstration on Sunday, September 6 in the gallery courtyard.

A long-time favorite at Edgewood Orchard Galleries, Frederick Somers has been painting full-time since 1975 at his farm-home-studio near Northfield, Minn. His oil and pastel paintings, known for their peaceful sensitivity, reflect themes from the land. Whether in intimate views of grass, rocks and water with reflections of light and sky, or in spacious vistas of the countryside he seeks to share the hidden places of nature.

Featured jeweler Ed Levin began creating innovative and distinctly original jewelry in 1950. He started designing jewelry while living in Buenos Aires and working with a master Florentine jeweler. He brought what he learned back to the United States and founded Ed Levin Jewelry. His jewelry continues to be handcrafted using age-old techniques and only the finest materials.
