New Business: Door County Bagel Company

Alex and Patrick Cole moved to Door County in 2012, and although they love the area’s cafes and coffee shops, they found themselves missing bagels and thought a bagel shop would do well in Sturgeon Bay.

“It’s an idea we’ve had for a while,” Alex said. “We moved here from a college town where there were bagels everywhere.”

Then, this summer, as they were quarantined and found themselves with “more time than ever,” they decided to float the idea of creating their own bagels to their friends and family. They started baking test batches, created a social media page and invited friends and family to sample their bagels to test the response.

“All of a sudden, we had people commenting that weren’t even friends of friends, and we had enough interest to make a few dozen bagels,” Alex said. “Now, everyday, we are baking and selling a few dozen.”

The Coles’ website went live two weeks ago, and they’ve been baking since. Both Alex and Patrick have backgrounds in hospitality and have many combined years of experience serving and managing in the food-service and beverage industries. Ultimately, they have plans to scale up and navigate the logistics of baking outside their home kitchen, but for now, they’re learning as they go.
