New Candle Benefitting Hurricane Ian Recovery

Door County Candle Company is pouring another charitable candle – this one to assist with Hurricane Ian recovery efforts.

All profits from the sale of the company’s Beachside candle will be donated to the Red Cross. The teal-colored candle “smells like a day at the beach – full of sunscreen and coconut,” said Christiana Gorchynsky Trapani, owner of the company.

The business model for the candle sales was honed during the Ukraine campaign, which is ongoing. To date, the company has sold some 80,000 Ukraine candles, donating more than $800,000 to a Ukrainian nonprofit.

Ian hit Florida with maximum winds of 150 mph as a Category 4 storm Sept. 28 in Fort Myers. It crossed the peninsula diagonally the next day and blew in a storm surge along the opposite coast.

On its website for Hurricane Ian relief information, the American Red Cross said its work is just beginning in the wake of the storm, and it will be helping families to recover for months to come. Right now, the organization is focusing on providing safe shelter, meals and comfort for people facing “unimaginable destruction.”
