New Dala Horses at Frykman Studio Gallery

For his recently completed collection of handmade wooden horses, carver David Frykman has reached way back to the traditions of his forbears in central Sweden for inspiration. For centuries farm people in this area have passed long winter nights carving pine horses, most likely first as toys for their children but eventually as items of trade, with each area developing and producing its own style of horse. The distinctive and familiar Dalecarlian or Dala horses, usually bright red and with a colorful pattern, are but one of many different styles artisans have produced. Frykman has borrowed from the tradition but adapted it with his own unique carving and painting style to produce a series of horses from little 4” ponies to a group of 17” steeds.

Frykman’s Dala horses are available now at the Frykman Studio Gallery, Highway 42 on the south end of Sister Bay. For more information, call 920.854.7351 or visit FrykmanGallery.com.
