New Eatery Is Out of This World: Shiny Moon Cafe Debuts in Fish Creek

There’s a lot to be said about new businesses that fit the aesthetic of Door County, but I’ve come to appreciate locations that invoke a feeling that’s unlike anything else you can find here. In the big cities, it’s not uncommon to find interesting shops, bars and cafes tucked away on the second floor of a different business or nestled below the street level, and entering one always feels as though you’re discovering something new.

The space above the Fish Creek Market certainly fits that bill, and its previous restaurant resident, Mr. Helsinki, captured that feeling perfectly. Now Angie McMahon has transformed the space into a cozy, urban-feeling spot named Shiny Moon Cafe.

The aesthetic is subtle, with white walls and wood trim that allow the rustic-modern pieces at the front counter and dining area to really pop. The menu also reflects this simple, but curated approach with cafe staples such as the classic breakfast sandwich (made to sing with de árbol aioli), balanced nicely by exciting items such as the duck-confit hash.

The deviled-egg sandwich is as uncommon as it gets.

A standout for me is the deviled-egg sandwich, in which the egg is the sandwich. Crispy bacon, roasted tomatoes, pickled mustard seeds and red-pepper aioli make up the deviled-egg filling, which is sandwiched between the egg halves and served as a pair. If you’re looking for a light snack and want to try something delicious and altogether uncommon, this one hits the spot.

The chicken-salad sandwich boasts celery, tarragon and pecans on a fluffy croissant.

On special was a classic chicken-salad sandwich, which flips the script in terms of texture profile: celery, tarragon and pecans provide a sweet and crunchy interior, paired with a soft, fluffy croissant for the exterior. Both dishes were served with delicate, lightly sweetened greens.

In addition to the breakfast and lunch menus, Shiny Moon Cafe is a full-service coffee and tea bar that also has a rotating selection of wine, beer and cider, making it a great stop both before and after getting out on the water in Fish Creek: Perk up with caffeine in the morning, and kick back with a drink in the afternoon.

If you feel at home working on a laptop in a metropolitan cafe or just want to impress a friend who’s looking for the cool, new spot, Shiny Moon Cafe, 4164 Main St. in Fish Creek, is checking all the boxes.
