SŌMI Gallery, 45 S. 3rd Ave. in Sturgeon Bay, will host an opening in its Third Room gallery on May 27, 4-6 pm, for Carol Emmons’ installation “Miasma.” Using texts in different media, it addresses how individuals – both throughout history and currently – make sense of contagion in its various senses.
Emmons uses embroidery, laser-cut wood and found objects in her sculptural constructions to reflect our collective and individual vulnerabilities and responses, and to suggest how fate may play a role. She plays with the stories that society tells itself, including superstitions, astrology and science.
Emmons, a UW-Green Bay professor emerita in art and design, specializes in large, site-specific installations that she has exhibited throughout the United States and in Europe.
