New Pieces by Dawn Patel at Sourced

Sturgeon Bay’s Sourced has a whole room dedicated to Brilliant Stranger, the collection of art, accessories and clothing by local artist Dawn Patel. It’s filled with warm and whimsical creations, perfect for fall and winter gifts.

“Refab,” Patel’s line of upcycled clothing, features vintage clothing and fabric transformed through creative tailoring, mixing patterns and adding hand-painted and silkscreened imagery. Her latest pieces include extra-long scarves for wrapping up in color and texture, jackets with granny squares and lace, and sweaters featuring the long-legged bird family.

Birds are one of Patel’s favorite motifs. She’s been sewing them into clothes for years, and they show up frequently in her drawings and paintings. She is also working on a children’s book full of Chimney Swifts, in collaboration with singer/songwriter and artist Jenn Rawling, of Portland and Milwaukee. It is based on the lyrics from one of her songs, “Goodnight Little Birdies.”

There are also quite a few birds on her hand-painted pillows, which are made with recycled canvas and upholstery fabric, and stuffed with eco-fill made from recycled plastic mixed with shredded fabric scraps from Patel’s studio.

Sourced seeks to be a maker-embracing resource for art, accessories, and home decor, and a catalyst for encouraging artistic collaborations and crafty fun. Sourced is located at 24 N. Third Ave. in downtown Sturgeon Bay. For more information, visit Sourced on Facebook.
