A New Place for Pooches in Baileys Harbor

A wide variety of eager canines accompanied their owners for the June 16 grand opening of the new Capt. Baileys Dog Park on Summit Road in Baileys Harbor.

“This isn’t just a dog park for dogs. It’s a dog park for people with dogs,” said Baileys Harbor town chair Don Sitte before cutting a ribbon for the new dog park. “People can get together here and make new friends, tell each other how their dog is much prettier than the other dogs. Also everybody can come out here and exercise with their dogs.”

The caged dog park has two sections – one for large dogs and a smaller area for small dogs.

Sitte also pointed out that dog owners are welcome to walk their dogs – on leashes – through the town-owned 40 acres that surrounds the dog park.

There is plenty of off-road parking for dog park users. Sitte mentioned there is more work to do at the park, including the addition of trees, benches and picnic tables, “but that other stuff probably won’t be done until Labor Day and we felt it needed to be open this summer.”

Both the town and the Baileys Harbor Community Association are still accepting donations for the dog park. A sign with donors’ names will be erected.
