New Poems Line Poetry Trail in Door County

The current exhibit on Newport State Park’s Poetry Trail features poems from The Unabridged Poetry Group. The display will run through the month of September.

Seven featured poets are members of the long established critique group, including Sharon Auberle, Loraine Brink, David Clowers, Sue DeKelver, Donajean Durkin, Barbara Larsen, and Rolf Olson. The other poets which round out the exhibit are Ralph Murre, Nancy Rafal, and Sister Irene Zimmerman.

The next display, featuring the works of Door County Poet Laureate Barbara Larsen, will be put up in October and will run through March 2012.

In the fall a reception will be held in celebration of all the poets whose works have been displayed during the past year. Poets Sharon Auberle, Phil Hansotia, and Nancy Rafal are current members of the Poetry Trail committee.

“We are grateful to Jack Travis of the Newport Wilderness Society and park manager, Michelle Hefty, for suggesting this project and helping us get started,” said Hansotia.

The poetry trail at Newport State Park begins across the parking lot from the Welcome Center.

The trail is a joint project of local poet groups and the Newport Wilderness Society. The public can contribute toward the cost of presenting the poetry displays by mailing checks to The Newport Wilderness Society, P.O. Box 187, Ellison Bay, WI 54210.

Newport State Park is on County NP, east of Highway 42 near Gills Rock. A state park vehicle sticker is required for admission.
