New Poetry on Newport’s Poetry Trail

The poetry of Sharon Auberle, Door County Poet Laureate 2017-2019, is on display on the Newport State Park Poetry Trail. Maintained by Write On, Door County, the works will be on display through early December.

Auberle grew up in the Midwest, exploring fields, woods and waters, often in the company of her grandfather, who passed his love of the outdoors to her. With this heritage, her years of living in the Southwest, and now in Door County, she finds much to draw on in her writing and photography.

Auberle’s poetry and photography have appeared in numerous publications and anthologies, both print and online, and she has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She has facilitated poetry workshops at Write On, The Clearing Folk School, and Scandia Village as well as through Gibraltar Area Schools and Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Library.

The Poetry Trail can be accessed via the Welcome Center parking lot. The trail wanders through a wooded area and out into open land. The ten stanchions along the path along people an opportunity to experience poetry within the beauty of nature. The trail began as a joint project of local poetry groups and the Newport Wilderness Society. Since 2016, the trail has become a program of Write On. Poetry exhibits are scheduled to change quarterly. Newport State Park is located on County NP, east of Highway 42, near Gills Rock. A state park vehicle sticker is required for admission.
