Newport Celebrates Earth Science Week

The Newport Wilderness Society, a Friends Group supporting Newport State Park, has scheduled a number of events to help celebrate Earth Science Week from October 11 – 17.

On Oct. 11, Dr. Jack Travis, a retired geology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, will give two presentations. The first, Rocks and Fossils, will provide hands on experience for children and adults in identifying rocks and fossils both at the nature center and along Newport’s shoreline from 10 – 11:30 am. Travis’ second presentation from 2 – 3:30 pm will address climate change.

Then, on Oct. 17, Dr. Allan Schneider, a retired geology professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and District Geologist for the former Lake Michigan District of Wisconsin DNR, will give a slide show presentation, Parkland Rocks and Landforms. The presentation from 2 – 4 pm will be a largely non-technical geologic tour of about 60 city, county, state, and national parks and monuments.
