Newport Celebrates

August 9 marks Smokey Bear’s 70th birthday as he continues to communicate his well-known message: “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.”

“Many people think that lightening starts most wildfires. In fact, 9 out of 10 wildfires nationwide are started by humans,” said Michelle Hefty, Newport State Park manager. “Wildfires sparked by humans in Wisconsin are most commonly caused by debris or trash burning on windy days. The easiest way to prevent these fires is to simply obtain a burn permit and follow the rules.”

To commemorate Smokey’s birthday, the Wisconsin DNR will be hosting several events planned at various locations.

Newport State Park will celebrate on August 9 at the park with cake, refreshments, games, prizes and a chance to meet Smokey Bear. The festivities start at 10 am and continue throughout the day.

On Aug. 10, Newport will also have a special day with programs led by Geriann Albers, a Wisconsin DNR furbearer ecologist. Starting at 1 pm she will discuss the fascinating world of mammals at the Visitors Center. Then at 8 pm, Albers will present a program about the ecology of the coyote. Participants will get the chance to try out their howls and listen for any responses.

On Aug. 12, Newport will be hosting a Perseid Meteor Shower viewing at 8 pm. Guest astronomers from University of Wisconsin – Madison will be on hand with a high powered telescope. People interested should meet at Lot 3 with a blanket or chairs. Newport State Park is located at 475 County Hwy NP, Ellison Bay.
