Newport Poetry Trail Features Lorine Niedecker

Lorine Niedecker

The winter display of poetry at Newport State Park features the work of Lorine Niedecker (1903 – 1970), whose poetry will remain on the Poetry Trail through March. The poems on the trail are a sample of her works, some short and some excerpts from longer works.

Niedecker visited The Ridges Sanctuary in the late 1960s and composed one of her longer poems, “Wintergreen Ridge,” based on her experience there. Lines from “Wintergreen Ridge” will be added to the Baileys Harbor Community Mural Project in the spring. The poem was the impetus for the mural according to Nancy Rafal, project coordinator.

The poetry trail at Newport State Park begins across the parking lot from the Welcome Center, and includes ten standards with two poems each. When trails are open for cross-country skiing part of the Poetry Trail is accessible only by skiers.

Newport State Park is on County NP, east of State Highway 42 near Gills Rock. For more information, call 920.854.2500.
