Newport State Park Celebrates Earth Science Week

The American Geological Institute has declared October 10 – 16, 2010 as Earth Science Week. This year’s theme is “Exploring Energy.” In addition, the United States National Parks have declared October 13, 2010 as the first annual National Fossil Day.

As part of Earth Science Week and National Fossil Day celebrations, Newport Wilderness Society, a nonprofit organization supporting Newport State Park, is sponsoring presentations in the Hotz Nature Room (attached to the park office) at the park.

On October 11, from 2 – 3:30 pm, Dr. Travis will present “How Do We Use Energy?”

On October 13 from 2 – 4 pm, Dr. Travis will show participants how to identify fossils followed by a fossil hunt in Newport State Park to celebrate National Fossil Day.

On October 15 from 2 – 3:30 pm, Dr. Travis will present “Fossil Fuels and Climate Change.”
