Newport State Park to Establish Poetry Trail

A new feature at Newport State Park in Ellison Bay this summer will be a Poetry Trail. The trail is a collaborative effort between Newport State Park, the Newport Wilderness Society, and three poet groups. The first display of the year will take place from July though September, featuring works by the Wallace Group.

Ten weather-protected posts will be placed on a segment of the trail leading to Rowleys Bay from the Visitor Center parking lot. The trail will continue on a loop of the Monarch trail that leads back to the parking lot. Seven or eight posts will be on the Monarch leg so that they will be accessible for handicapped park visitors.

Displays will change seasonally. Each spring poems of county high school students will be featured. The fall poem displays will pay homage to a distinguished poet known regionally, nationally, or internationally.

The public can help by contributing to the Newport Poetry Trail Support Fund. Make checks payable to the Newport Wilderness Society, PO Box 187, Ellison Bay, WI 54210.
