The Expositor

May 15, 1874

Reports come to us of a disagreeable row in front of the post office between two of our oldest citizens. A temperance discussion was the starting point.

If you have anything to hide, do so quickly, for the assessor will soon be looking about and taking a note of your wealth. If you have no other place to hide your horses, wagon, piano and other cumbersome valuables, put them in the stove pipe. They will be safe there.

The Republican

May 19, 1892

On Tuesday Chas. Thompson, who is engaged in fishing near the mouth of the bay, caught, in addition to other fish, a genuine salmon weighing about six pounds. The fish was sold to Albert Kalmbach, of this city, who informs us that about six years ago a small quantity of salmon fry was planted in Green Bay as an experiment and the fish was probably one of that lot. This is the third or fourth specimen of this species of fish that has been caught in Green Bay which would indicate that it would be possible to stock these waters with salmon. In appearance the fish looked somewhat like a trout but its scales glistened with a silvery brightness and a broad red stripe extended along its sides from the head to the tail. When first taken from the water it presented a beautiful appearance.

WILL BUILD A CITY HALL.

Present indications point to the fact that work on a new city hall for Sturgeon Bay will be commenced during the present summer. At the council meeting Tuesday evening it was practically decided to carry out the plans of building a city hall, which had been agreed upon by Mayor Hay’s administration when the lot was purchased on Cedar street. The plans and specifications submitted by Fred Crandall to the administration are to be used.

The plans drawn by Mr. Crandall are for a building to cost about $6,000. The trading of the lot on the west side of Cedar street for Mr. Dehos’ lot on the east side of Cedar street, is the proper thing to do, as it will be closer to the city market square, and more practicable for city hall purposes.

The herring fishing is starting up good now. At Ellison Bay they are running very heavy, as high as 100 packages a day. At Jackson Harbor Chas. McDonald on his first lift got only one package, but his lift on Tuesday brought him 40 packages. Fred Richter and George Nelson have not got their nets in yet as help is very scarce.

Cherry Bloom Delayed

The many acres of cherry trees are about ready to burst into bloom but the cold weather is retarding the opening of the blossoms. The white of the buds can now be seen but with continued cold weather the trees are not expected to burst into full bloom until next week.

This would mean that the blossoms will be out about May 25th and it is anticipated that they will still be on the trees by May 29th.

The office of the Chamber of commerce has sent out hundreds of letters relative to inquiries and are now set the latter date May 25th to 30 as the bloom period instead of May 22nd.

COUNCIL TO STUDY COSTS OF CITY SEWERAGE DISPOSAL PLANT

Pending a study of costs for the actual survey, the common council at its meeting Tuesday evening voted to accept the recommendation of the health committee that action be taken to approve a project for the installation of a sewerage disposal system in Sturgeon Bay.

The problem is one which has a direct bearing on the health of the community and the future of the city, and it is understood many councilmen favor the idea of going ahead with the work when and if it is possible to proceed without too great a burden being placed upon the taxpayers.
