• The time of year is to start planning and carrying out Phragmites treatments is here. Late August through early October is the best time to treat since the herbicide will translocate through the plant as it prepares for overwintering and will be more effective on its persistent stolons (underground, horizontal roots).

DOT Agrees to Maintain Right-of-Way in Sister Bay
• The Department of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to maintain the existing right-of-way between Mill Road and Scandia Road in Sister Bay.

Washington Island School District Not Pursuing Expeditionary Learning
• Washington Island School District will no longer move forward with its Expeditionary Learning (EL) curriculum. The school participated in an exploratory year with the program, but decided not to continue.

Wisconsin Coastal Management Program to Hold Meeting in Sturgeon Bay
• The Department of Administration’s (DOA) Wisconsin Coastal Management Program will hold four free workshops around the state in July and August to discuss low water levels on Lakes Superior and Michigan, including one in Door County.

Door County Board of Supervisors Moves Projects Ahead
• At its regular monthly meeting on July 23, the Door County Board of Supervisors approved moving up a couple of projects for this year rather than waiting until 2014.

George K. Pinney County Park Dedication Sunday
• The Town of Jacksonport will hear in August if it received a grant from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program to help cover the cost of purchasing the property next to Lakeside Park.

Australasia Added to National Historic Registry
• The remains of the Australasia, a wooden bulk carrier that sank about 800 feet southeast of Whitefish Dunes State Park beach, is one of three Lake Michigan shipwrecks added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Gibraltar Area Schools Budget Approved
• At its July 8 meeting, the Gibraltar School Board approved a preliminary budget of $9.721 million for the 2013-14 school year, with projected expenditures of $9,524,592 million.

Door County Board of Supervisors Adds to Zoning for Assembly Halls
• At its June 25 meeting, the Door County Board of Supervisors approved zoning ordinances that define assembly halls and auditoriums and set zoning standards for each.

• A proposal circulating in the Wisconsin Legislature would allow public schools to start anytime in the fall, according to an Associated Press article.

Egg Harbor Town Board Voted Not to Support Lower Speed Limit on Section of Highway T
• The Egg Harbor Town Board voted not to support a lower speed limit on a section of County Highway T. The Village of Egg Harbor requested the Door County Highway Department lower the speed limit to 35 mph from the current 55 mph between Division Street and State Highway 42.
