  • The Treasures in Miss Emma’s Attic

    In Norbert Blei’s tribute to Emma Toft in his 1981 book, Door Way, he noted that she was “a legend, bordering on myth.” A piece by Roy Lukes, written after Emma’s death on Valentine’s Day 1982, at age 91, described her as “Wisconsin’s first lady of conservation…who influenced people throughout the state, as well as visitors from other states and foreign countries.

  • Eastern Tent Caterpillars

    Noticing the webs of tent caterpillars (also known as “army worms”) on roadsides in Baileys Harbor and Egg Harbor, the Pulse contacted Linda Williams, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources forest health specialist for the Northeast region, who provided the following information: Eastern Tent Caterpillar is a native insect that periodically has better years than others and populations will increase in different parts of the state in different years.

  • Effects of Marijuana

    A study monitoring 3,725 teenage marijuana users until they reached 30 years of age found that 60 percent of them were less likely to finish high school than their non-using peers.

  • Bird Sanctuary Breaks Ground

    “We could not have asked for a more beautiful spring day for our groundbreaking ceremony…That’s a great sign for things to come here,” said Rob Hults, co-founder and executive director of the Open Door Bird Sanctuary in Jacksonport as volunteers and supporters gathered on May 23 for a groundbreaking for the sanctuary’s bird care center.
