Nine Student Builders Complete DKBEP Project

The 2014 Student Builders were: (Front row, left to right) John Hartwig, Kolt Knutson, Tyler Bertrand, Ben Weber, (back row, left to right) Jacob Massart, Calen Dellemann, Mike Dier, Alex Mehn and Zach Baldwin. Jeff Schlag was their NWTC instructor.

The Door Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership (DKBEP) honored the achievements of nine area youth at an open house on June 11 for the 7th Annual DKBEP High School Home Construction Program. Student builder Jacob Massart, a graduate from Luxemburg Casco High School, took home the Miles Zastrow Excellence in Building and Achievement Award, presented by Miles’ son Ben Zastrow. Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA) President Joe Porton awarded Massart with a $1,000 scholarship to be used toward future educational endeavors in a trade field.

High school students representing Luxemburg-Casco, Kewaunee, and Sturgeon Bay school districts joined forces with the DCHBA, NWTC and the DKBEP to build a home from start to finish during the 2013/14 school year. The students were involved in all aspects of home construction under the direct guidance of NWTC instructor Jeff Schlag. Each student has earned 16 transcripted credits for advanced placement in the Structural Systems certificate program at NWTC. This program is an effort to help grow the local construction and trades industries skilled workforce while providing real-world learning opportunities for youth.
