Ninth Annual Gills Rock Artfest at Charlene’s Gallery Ten

Each year, Charlene Berg caps off the summer with a massing of talent in a festival of creativity at Gallery Ten. The grounds around the gallery are festooned with tents, displays, easels and a variety of specialty tools. For two days, Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6 the creative energies are on exhibit from 10 am – 5 pm as art-in-action becomes the only prevailing rule.

Two Door County potters set up a raku-firing kiln and demonstrate the process throughout the days. Painters work in plein air style, outdoors under the canopy of trees. Custom made items are often created on the spot by jewelers.

A broad spectrum of local and regional talent comes together at Gallery Ten each year. The following artists will be included in this year’s Gills Rock Artfest:

• Denise Bunkert, Savage, MN, soft pastel

• Elizabeth Dawson, West Allis, alcohol-based ink paintings, silk scarves

• Joni Doyle-Sims, De Forest, silver jewelry

• Sherry Finley, Racine, hand-sculpted wire jewelry

• Mark Haberle, Oconomowoc, oil landscapes and still life

• Dick Helland, Palatine, IL, watercolor

• Gary Hubbard, Rockford, IL, wood turning

• Dennis Kandziora, Brookfield, turned wooden pens

• Ray Kapfamer, Green Bay, oil on canvas

• Dagmar Kau, Ellison Bay, raku firing and wheel thrown pottery

• Anne Kloss, Waukesha, beaded jewelry

• Norm Knott, Rockford, painted and enhanced assemblages

• Angela Lensch, Baileys Harbor, jewelry

• Chris Meissner, Milwaukee, embossed copper foil and calligraphy

• Peter Newkirk, Ellison Bay, raku firing and wheel thrown pottery

• Marcia Nickols, Ephraim, acrylic

The GT Coffee shop will feature a selection of specialty treats and several entertainers will take the stage each day to provide a festive air. Christine and Nelson Whyatt will lead off the entertainment on Saturday, September 5, playing fiddle and accordion duos from 11 am – 1 pm. On Sunday, September 6, “Dandelion” Dan Luedcke, one of the founding members of Toivo (Finnish for hope), a very popular local Door County band, will perform. On both Saturday and Sunday, singer Jesse Roltgen will keep the entertainment rolling with her original folk-styled song stories.

The spirit of Artfest 2008 is captured in an online video currently featured on the home page of the gallery’s Web site www. GalleryTen.com.
