Northern Sky Gets Liquor License from Town of Gibraltar

Because the Town of Gibraltar issued its reserve liquor license to Welcker’s Lounge during last month’s meeting, it was able to issue an above-quota license to Northern Sky Theater during a July 5 meeting. The theater company had previously approached the town about the license, prompting it to issue its reserve license, which had been shelved since 1999.

An above-quota liquor license can be issued only after a municipality has issued its maximum number of Class B liquor licenses and reserve licenses. According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, above-quota licenses are limited to venues such as full-service restaurants with inside seating for 300-plus people; hotels with 50-plus rooms, and either an attached restaurant with a 150-plus seating capacity or a banquet room with a 400-plus capacity; and nonprofit opera houses and theaters.

Northern Sky fits the third description, and town staff recommended that the town board award the theater company the license. The town is not limited on the number of above-quota licenses it can issue, so other organizations may also apply for an above-quota license, according to town administrator Travis Thyssen.
