Northern Sky’s Herbst and Alley Named Mt. Horeb High School Distinguished Alumni

The Distinguished Alumni Committee of Mt. Horeb High School in Wisconsin recognized Jeffrey Herbst and Fred Alley as their 2016 recipients during the school’s Homecoming festivities on Sept. 23.

Herbst and Alley graduated high school in 1981. It’s no secret in Door County that both men have made considerable contributions to the world of music and theater since leaving the hallowed halls of Mt. Horeb.

Herbst has served as Artistic Director of Northern Sky since 1993, developing numerous new works for their stage and shaping their New Works Program supported by the Fred Alley New Musical Fund.

Alley served as co-founder and Artist-In-Residence for American Folklore Theatre and was a prolific writer of many of the company’s most beloved musicals. He passed away in 2001.

The celebration included recognition at the homecoming pep rally, honorable inclusion in homecoming parade, introduction during halftime of the football game, and a recognition plaque to be placed in the auditorium lobby. Herbst also performed at halftime with the Mt. Horeb Marching Band.

Now in its 26th Season, Northern Sky Theater presents original musical theater under the stars at Peninsula State Park in the summer and indoors in the fall. With Herbst’s guidance and expertise and Alley’s passion and creativity, Northern Sky has created a body of theatrical work unparalleled by any other troupe, while simultaneously advancing the craft of the American musical.
