Northland College Choir to Perform in Sturgeon Bay

From April 19 – 25 vocalists from Northland College in Ashland, Wis. will spend six days traveling through Wisconsin and into Illinois to perform five concerts entitled “Songs of Seasons and Spirit.” They will begin their tour with a send-off concert on the Northland College campus, followed by a performance on Sunday, April 19, in Green Bay. They will perform again the following evening in Sturgeon Bay at the First Baptist Church, 610 N. Fifth Ave. at 7:30 pm. The students will then continue their tour with visits to Madison and Chicago before returning to Ashland. The singers will also perform outreach visits to local high schools in Sturgeon Bay and Madison. All of the concerts on the tour will be free and open to the public.

The concerts, held in churches along the route, will feature music from Africa, Europe and early America, ranging from sacred motets to English partsongs to songs from Italian Opera. Selections will include music by Gerald Finzi, Joseph Haydn, Gustav Holst, Stephen Paulus, Hans Leo Hassler, C.V. Stanford, René Clausen, Giuseppe Verdi, and Georges Bizet.

Two choral groups will perform at each concert, the Northland College Chamber Choir, made up of nine select singers, and Northland Singers, the principal student choir at Northland, made of 46 singers from a diversity of disciplines on campus. The performers represent a cross section of Northland’s student body, with majors ranging from biology to music to outdoor education, joined together by a shared love of singing.
