Norwegian Heritage Day at Crossroads

In late September Crossroads at Big Creek is hosting a variety of programs celebrating everything from Norwegian heritage and the Mars Rover Curiosity.

On Sept. 30, 1:30 – 3:30 pm, The Sons of Norway, in collaboration with the Door County Historical Society, present Norwegian Heritage Day. This day will highlight different aspects of Norwegian culture and heritage.

Demonstrations will include weaving, tatting, hardanger needlework, knitting and woodwork. Decorative folk art including rosemaling and woodworking will be on display and visitors will be invited to taste a number of traditional Norwegian pastries. In addition, George Evenson will give a presentation on “The Hanson House.”

On Oct. 1, the Friends of Crossroads will meet in the Collins Learning Center at 6:30 pm to plan for upcoming events and projects. Potential visitors are welcome.

The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society will hold their October meeting at 7 pm on Oct. 2 at the Stonecipher Astronomy Building at Crossroads. Tom Minahan will present the monthly topic, “An Update on the Mars Rover Curiosity,” and Ray Stonecipher will present “Neutrinos.” Refreshments will be served.

These events are free and open to the public.

The Collins Learning Center, located at 2041 Michigan Street, is open daily 2 – 4:30 pm. In the fall, The Historical Village at The Crossroads is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.
