Notes from the Grove

Welcome to the Notes from the Grove, providing Liberty Grove residents and visitors tid bits of information about goings on in town government.

• Paving will begin on S. Appleport Lane, Maplewood Road, Little Sister Cemetery and Pebble Beach Road. As in the past Sister Bay will be contributing to the cost of paving in the Little Sister Cemetery area. Residents are notified of road projects scheduled in their area.

• David Dorschner Associates are continuing with the revaluation of Liberty Grove. The Board of Review has been adjourned until September 28 at 1 pm. Open Book will be every day of the week from September 19 – 24. The time is yet to be determined. Contact the Town Office with questions.

• The Plan Commission continues to work on the review of the Smart Growth Plan for the town. The next meeting will address the transportation section of the Smart Growth Plan.

• The Neptune Dive Club has launched its fundraising drive for the Port des Morts Staircase Project. The club proposes to build a staircase from the Town Park to the waters of Deaths Door. It will provide access for divers to Death’s Door waters. Information on contributing is found on their website, http://www.neptunesdiveclub.com.

• The Town Crew will also build a staircase to access the beach at Hotz Memorial Park. Information on all Town Parks is located on the town website.

• Records indicate a stone quarry was opened in 1854 at Table Bluff, which was a short distance north of Gills Rock. It was believed the stone was a marble of fine quality. The Newhall House, an elegant Milwaukee hotel, used the stone in its foundation. The stone proved not to be of the quality first thought and the quarry received few orders. It was abandoned and fell into ruin. Unfortunately the Newhall House burned in 1882 and some 180 guests died in the fire.
