Obituary: Davis Richard “Scotty” Turner

Our loving and beloved Scotsman, Davis Richard “Scotty” Turner, died in the presence of his family in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., on December 12, 2015.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK on June 27, 1947 to Catherine Campbell (Nixon) and Llewellyn Turner, Scotty was an intrepid yachtsman and rigger who went on to sail his way across the globe, finally setting down his anchor for good in Wisconsin.

Scotty’s sense of humor was legendary and was woven through the colorful recounts of his many adventures from North Africa to the West Indies, and in the sage advice he often imparted to all in need.

His great love of nature was expressed through a God-given gift of landscaping which was so perfectly apparent at the homes he and Sheila and their family shared in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and Captiva Island, Florida.  Filled with all that was “sweet to the eye” his gardens were a favorite place where everyone loved to gather, laughing and roasting marshmallows over one his many bonfires.

He received the diagnosis of his illness with grace, fortitude and dignity, declaring that his only regret in life was “riding with the Marlboro Man”.

Scotty is survived by his wife of 40+ years, Sheila (Haggerty) Turner; daughter, Kathryn Turner and the five children who he claimed as his own at the young age of twenty eight (what was he thinking?), Beatrice Stein (Lawrence), Mike Kelsey (Jeannine), Barbara McIntire (Mark), Peggy Kelsey (Michael Teich), Brian Kelsey (Phil Berndt).

His grandchildren are: Martin Kelsey (Tiffany), Palmer, Henry, Arthur, Walter, Merrill and Sheila Bea Kelsey; Rachael, Jacob and Andrew Stein; Kelsey Anderson (Jeffrey), Emily and Natalie McIntire; Meghan, John and Ben Teich; Maxwell and Spencer Berndt; great grandchildren: Evie and Ellie Kelsey.

He is also survived by his sister, Jeannette Beattie (Jim) of Hawick, Scotland; nephews Neil and Alan Beattie.

In deep appreciation for the loving care he received from the Door County Cancer Center, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations given to the David Spude Cancer Center Fund (c/o Ministry Door County Medical Center Cancer Foundation, 323 S. 18th Ave.,  Sturgeon Bay, WI  54235) OR  ministryhealth.org/dcmh/home.nws.

A celebration of Scotty’s life will be held at the family’s home in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin in the summer of 2016. He’ll also go out with a bang by sponsoring one of the world-famous Captiva Island Mullet Parades.
