Obituary: Deloris L. Spiegle

March 23, 1926 ~ August 18, 2022

On Thursday, August 18th, 2022, Deloris L. Spiegle, age 96 died.

One of eight children, Deloris was born on March 23, 1926, to Marshall and Emma (DuBois) Monfils, and lived her entire life in Door County, attending Sevastopol School. Deloris married the love of her life, Walton “Wally” Spiegle on May 5, 1945. She was her husband’s right hand; they did everything together. His nickname for her was “Dee Dee”.

Throughout her lifetime, Deloris loved dancing. Wally was the perfect dance partner and together they enjoyed many Sunday afternoons dancing at Slovan. They loved Polkas, Deloris was very good at the Limbo. Dianne learned from the best. When Dianne would say who her parents were, she often would hear “it’s your parents who were the good dancers, we just loved to watch them dance”.

Deloris was a strong woman, who lived for her family. Kevin has many fond memories with his grandparents. Every Friday he would switch buses at Southern Door School, and they would pick him up on the West Side. As Kevin got older, he would cut Grandma’s lawn or move snow and she would make supper. Babysitting her great grandchildren gave her a purpose after Wally passed. Her heart of gold was felt by anyone who knew her. Jack said, “I couldn’t have had a better mother-in-law, if I picked her myself.” She was also grandma to the pets. Growing up Dianne had a pet cat “Fluffy”, who had a long life, because her mom took such good care of her.

Dianne was proud to have her as her right hand, whenever needed, as they did many things together. Both Deloris and Wally took pride in their appearance. Dianne said, “if I had a nickel for every time I heard the compliment how much I looked like my mother, I’d be rich”.

After Wally’s health declined, his doctor praised her for the care she had shown and gave him, when he could no longer do for himself. Her faith got her through a lot. She definitely earned her angel wings a long time ago.

Deloris loved going for walks, working Jig Saw puzzles, doing Word Finds, watching her favorite television shows, especially the Polka Dancing on Sunday mornings at 11:00 and was known for cooking the best chicken (Christmas tradition) as well as baking great cookies. Another tradition in the family was all the parties celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, etc. When Deloris would bake Dianne a birthday cake her dad would like to help do the decorating. Dianne remembers as a child when her mom would make spaghetti with tomato soup and boil potatoes with the peeling on. Mom and I thought that was the greatest thing. Most of all Deloris loved being at home, where she resided until she was 95, before moving into Cardinal Ridge, and the Cardinal was her favorite bird.

Over the years, Deloris worked various cleaning jobs. She worked 21 ½ years at the Milwaukee Shoe Company, leaving to be caregiver for her mother. Deloris retired after working part time for Esquire Cleaners.

Her love will live on in the hearts of her daughter and son-in-law Dianne (Jack) Olson, grandson Kevin (Fianceé Tina DeGreef) Olson, and her great grandchildren Marissa (special friend Joe) and Preston Olson, sister Lucille Nachtwey of Green Bay, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends throughout the county.

Deloris was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wally in 2003; siblings and their spouses; Dorothy (Bill) Alexander, Harry, Willis (Loretta), Bernard (Delores), Norson and Isabelle (Stanley) Johnson, as well as several brother-in-law’s and sisters-in-law on Wally’s side, with the last being her sister-in-law Jeanette Spiegle, who passed away about a week and a half before Deloris, the families were very close.

Visitation will be from 2 – 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 25th at St. Joe’s Church with Mass at 4:00 p.m. with Father Bob officiating. Private burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been set up in her name. Forbes Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be offered at forbesfuneralhome.com

Special thanks to her caregivers while residing at home, caregivers from Cardinal Ridge and Unity Hospice, also to; Julie Kroll, Gloria Schneider, Mary Tanck, her Nurse Lora (Medical Center), St. Joes Church and Forbes Funeral Home for their wonderful care and support.

Deloris will be greatly missed by many. It’s never easy saying goodbye, but she is at peace and in a better place. She and Dad are dancing on the clouds. Now we have two bright stars in the sky.
