Obituary: Donald James Freix

April 5, 1952 ~ September 25, 2022

Donald James Freix, 70, of the Town of Gibraltar, WI, died early Sunday morning, September 25, 2022 at Anna’s Healthcare in Sturgeon Bay.

He was born April 5, 1952 in Sturgeon Bay, WI, the son of Arnold and Eleanor  (Kwaterski) Freix. Don grew up in Sister Bay, WI and graduated from Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, WI with the class of 1970. He went on to attend Carroll College in Waukesha, WI on a football scholarship for two years before returning home to Door County.

Don was a skilled woodworker who built quality guitars, dulcimers, and other instruments early on in his career. He also worked as a carpenter for various local construction companies before establishing his own business, Freix Co. Woodworking. There, Don performed many different jobs for both local and seasonal residents including remodels and other specialty projects. He also worked with many residents in drafting conceptual plans to help put their ideas on paper.

Don had passion for local government and served on various committees for the Town of Gibraltar, and also on the Airport Commission for Ephraim. He loved gardening and enjoyed growing various grains and especially his garlic.

Don also liked spending time on the water – kayaking and sailing.

He will be missed by his three siblings, Deborah (Paul) Woerfel, Daniel (Kathryn) Freix, and Douglas (Juanita) Freix; nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Silvia; and other relatives.

At Don’s request, there will be no public services.

The family requests that any memorial donations be directed to either Anna’s Healthcare (839 S. 18th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235) or Unity Hospice (2366 Oak Ridge Circle, De Pere, WI 54115). “We sincerely thank them for the loving care that they gave to Don in his final days.”
