Obituary: Donald S. Buchholz

Aug. 9, 1934 – Sept. 1, 2021

Donald S. Buchholz, 87, of Sister Bay, died at Good Samaritan Society–Scandia Village in Sister Bay, where he had lived the past four years.

He was born in Barron to Sherman and Rosa Pauline (Camerer) Buchholz. Don graduated from Barron High School before entering teachers’ college, where he received his teaching certification. He was stationed in the Air Force academy in Colorado, where he met and married B. Louise Bachmann.

He and Louise moved to Madison, where he graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in farm economics. They moved to Door County in 1975, when Don and Louise accepted a position with The Clearing, which was managed by the Farm Bureau and employed Don at the time. He and Louise managed The Clearing until their retirement at the end of 1999. Louise died Dec. 12, 2015.

In their retirement, Don enjoyed traveling with Louise. which included to Hawaii and Alaska, but gardening was number one, along with tending to their home and beekeeping. Don would be described as a welcoming, jovial spirit; a kind and gentle soul who loved to tell stories; and a person whom others enjoyed being around.

Survivors include his three children, Brian of Ellison Bay, Kathy (Mike) Swanson of Ellison Bay, Bruce (Libby) of Eau Claire; his dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews (and their children); and two sisters, Beverly (Kenny) Mulliken of Burlington, and Paula (Mike) Jackman of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held at Saturday, Sept. 4, 1 pm, at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, 11836 Hwy 42 in Ellison Bay, with Rev. James Honig officiating. Burial will follow at Little Sister Cemetery.
