Obituary: Gregory Orval Orsted

Gregory Orval Orsted, 66, Baileys Harbor, died May 23, 2017 after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born Dec. 29, 1950 in Sturgeon Bay to Orval and Patricia (Wenniger) Orsted.

Greg graduated from the Gibraltar High School in 1969 and attended NWTC; He operated gas stations in Green Bay and Algoma. He then operated an auto repair shop in Baileys Harbor, he was a cash crop farmer, did fish boils thru out Northern Door and in his younger years was a commercial fisherman with his grandpa Cliff Wenniger. He was the general “fix it” man for some of the area restaurants.

He married IdaKay Appel in Sturgeon Bay on Dec. 30, 1988.

Greg is survived by his wife IdaKay, “son” Christopher (Kari) Baumann; his mother Patricia; his siblings Ervin; Patricia (Richard) Czarnecki; Deborah (Thomas) Knauer; Clifford; Michele Isaacson; Keith (Heidi); Mark (Laurie); Martin; grandsons Grady and Brody Baumann, the boys were his true joy; In laws William (Cheryl); Robert (Joan); Edward (Holly); Tina Appel; and Thomas (Maxine) Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his father Orval and infant brother Joseph. In laws Bette (Robert) Phillips, Sandra Schmidt and Cindi (William) Benson.

Family and friends gathered at Stella Maris Baileys Harbor Site Catholic Church on Saturday, June 3, 2017, with a Mass of Christian Burial officiated by Fr. Ron Colombo officiating. Greg was Buried in the Baileys Harbor Town Cemetery.

The Schinderle Funeral Home, Algoma, assisted the family with arrangements. Place online condolences at www.schinderle.comIn lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
