Obituary: Gregory W. Virlee

Gregory Walter Virlee, 71, of Sturgeon Bay died at Door County Medical Center on August 1, 2023.   He was born October 21, 1951, in Sturgeon Bay to Henry and Ethel (Annoye) Virlee.  Greg married Margaret “Maggie” Dorothy Koenig on October 27, 1973, in Luxemburg.

Greg grew up on a farm in Brussels and graduated from Southern Door High School in 1969.  He attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and NWTI.  For most of his life, he worked for the U. S. Postal Service in Sturgeon Bay.  Greg enjoyed being the “bulk mail specialist” for Door County and had a great rapport with a variety of customers.  

Greg was a very active and long-time member of the Sturgeon Bay Lions Club, where he chaired the Rose Sales for thirteen years.  He was a Melvin Jones Award Recipient and recently received the Ray Hemple Award.  Greg also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the St. Joseph Church Financial Council.  He loved all sports but especially enjoyed following the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers.  He also liked golf and playing fantasy football.

Survivors include his wife, Maggie; two sons, Jesse (Jennifer) Virlee and Todd (Elizabeth) Virlee; two grandchildren Maia and Ellie Virlee; in-laws, Mary Virlee, Mabel (Wally) Kraynik, Harold (Bonnie) Koenig, and Elmer (Sandy) Koenig; nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother David and brother-in-law Frank Koenig.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Matthew Rappl officiating.  Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.  Inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sturgeon Bay Lions Club.  Forbes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
