Obituary: Hazel Irene Ellison

Hazel Irene Ellison, 97, of Sturgeon Bay, died Feb. 8, 2018 at Door County Medical Center.

She was born August 17, 1920 in the Town of Clay Banks, the daughter of Alvin M. and Amanda (Viste) Johnson. Hazel attended Carnot Grade School and graduated from Algoma High School and continued her studies at Manitowoc Vocational School. She was united in marriage to Curtis Raymond Ellison on June 24, 1944 at Forest Lutheran Church in Carnot in the Town of Forestville, and they were blessed with over 46 years of marriage. Curtis passed away November 16, 1992.

Hazel worked for Algoma Farmers’ Co-op as an assistant bookkeeper and then as a manager at the Forestville Co-op. She sold World Book Encyclopedias for 30 years.

Hazel was a former member of Forest Lutheran Church and currently a member of Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. She served as secretary of education for the Green Bay Conference (Lutheran) Women’s Group. At church, Hazel taught Sunday school and vacation bible school, was a member of the Ladies Aid, prayer chain, quilting group, and the Bible Study Circle.

Her love will live on in the hearts of her three children, Robert (Maryellen) Ellison, Lee (Mary) Ellison, both of Forestville, and Kathleen Ellison of Green Bay; four grandsons, Kurt (friend, Laura Exely), Kyle, John (fiancé, Jen Krueger), Reese (Stephanie); and two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Reid.

Hazel was welcomed Home by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Cheryl Ann Ellison; one brother and three sisters, Bob Johnson, Mildred (Clifford) Gunnlaugsson, June (Fritz) Kortbein, and Shirley (Gerald) Kugler; and three sisters-in-law, Esther (Raymond) Anderson, Viola (Wilmer) Long, and Hazel R. Ellison.

Hazel’s life was honored with a funeral service Feb. 13, 2018 at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay with Pastor Timothy Malek officiating. Hazel was laid to rest in Forest Lutheran Cemetery in Carnot in the Town of Forestville, beside her husband, Curtis.
