Obituary: Helen Ann Bladholm

May 3, 1933 ~ June 14, 2023

Helen Ann Bladholm, 90, of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, died June 14th, 2023, in her sleep.

Ann, born May 3, 1933, grew up in Skokie, Illinois and studied at Lawrence University in Appleton, and graduated from University Wisconsin-Madison, before completing her Master’s in Education at Northeastern University, Illinois. She went on to be active in Civil Rights for many years, was a freelance technical writer, and later in her career worked for the National Library Association Chicago and ADA (American Dental Association). Ann married the late John Bladholm (1930-2020) in 1956 and is survived by their four children. Ann lived life to its fullest, enjoying the outdoors, travel and family. She also could throw a mean horseshoe. She was a voracious reader and kept up with local and world news her whole life. She also enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and was fascinated by monarch butterflies and hummingbirds.

Longtime friend, artist Kathy Weaver recalls Friday night discussions with a diversity of friends and Ann’s passion for equal rights. During the Chicago race riots in the late 60s, she took carloads of clothing and supplies to the affected neighborhoods on the West and South sides. She was curious, enthusiastic, and adventurous and had a warmth and sense of humor that drew in a large number of friends. She also enjoyed telling stories about her time traveling in Mexico as a young woman. She always encouraged her husband, the love of her life, and children to create art.

She and John enjoyed the family land in Clay Banks township for many decades, initially with ‘living off the land’ picking wild strawberries, sumac and morel mushrooms with wilderness camping during summers there with their children, and then permanently in retirement. Ann loved exploring Door County, especially after her career in Chicago ended. Cave Point was a favorite, as was the causeway walk to Cana Island Lighthouse.

She is survived by her four children, Glen of Syracuse, New York, Linda of Hollywood, Florida, Sharon of Chicago, and Eric of Chicago; their grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; as well as brother, Joseph Wallner.

In honor of Ann’s wishes, private memorial services will be held.
