Obituary: Helen R. Walther

Helen Rose Walther died September 9, 2015, at Hearthside CBRF, in Sister Bay, Wis. She was born November 20, 1921, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Elmer and Laura Collins. She married the love of her life, Robert Blair Walther, on June 7, 1941, in Chicago, IL. Helen and Bob raised their family in Chicago, but vacationed in Sister Bay until they finally moved there in 1979.

Helen was a gourmet cook and an accomplished seamstress, making not only coats, but also, two of her daughters’ wedding dresses. She loved to entertain, whether by singing, dancing, or dressing up in costumes for Halloween. Swimming was her exercise of choice. She was a girl scout leader for many years, as well as a volunteer at the Hardy Gallery, Children’s Day, and Elder Hostel.

Helen is survived by three daughters: Judith Schmidt, Susan (Alfred) Schubert, and Patricia (Andrew) Horn. Her grandchildren are Karen (Pat) O’Hagan, Jeanne (Ron) Schroeder, Carissa Horn, Ian (Susan) Schubert, Eric (Tina) Schubert, Jessica (Gabriel) Alfaro, and Rebecca (Eric) Halleman. Her great-grandchildren are Deidre Lenke, Christian Schubert, Brendan Schubert, Emily Schroeder, Travix Schubert, and Curtis Schubert.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, her brother Elmer, Jr., and her son-in-law David Schmidt.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 2 to 4 PM at the Birchwood Lodge in Sister Bay, Wis. Burial will be private.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Door County Land Trust.
