Obituary: Jane Marie Hacker

August 30, 1928 ~ June 19, 2020

Jane Marie Hacker, 91, of Sturgeon Bay, died Friday afternoon, June 19, 2020 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay with her niece, Debra, at her side.

She was born August 30, 1928 in the Town of Buchanan, in Outagamie County, the daughter of Oscar and Johanna (Verkuilen) Onkels. Jane attended school in Kaukauna and moved to Sturgeon Bay at the age of 14. She worked as babysitter before going to work at a local grocery store. Jane was united in marriage to Ralph Emerson Hacker on March 2, 1947 at Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church where they remained lifelong members.

Jane worked as a waitress at a local restaurant and bar most of her life. She and Ralph were blessed with a son, Robert, who was born February 26, 1948. Jane and Ralph shared over 63 years of marriage. Robert passed away on May 18, 1987. Jane and Ralph became “parents” again later in life, when they were asked to be Godparents for their great-nephew, Andrew Crawford. Ralph preceded Jane in death on October 16, 2010.

Jane was an avid card player whose favorite games were blackjack, penny ante poker, and rummy. She enjoyed crocheting, and the doilies she created could be found throughout her home. Jane took great pride in “doing up” her yard during the Christmas season and “competing” with other family (yards). She had a passion for gardening and loved flowers, especially roses.

Jane is survived and missed by many nieces and nephews, including her brother Melvin “Bud” Onkels’ children, Daniel Joseph Onkels, David (Kay) James Onkels, both of Appleton, and Debra Crawford of Sturgeon Bay, who resided with and cared for Jane the past four years; many great-nephews and great-nieces including, Adam and Michelle Onkels, David and Andrew Crawford, and Samantha and Monica Dontje; sister-in-law, Jan Onkels of Kaukauna; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; three Brothers and two sisters-in-law, Melvin “Bud” (Geraldine) Onkels, Eugene (Eunice) Onkels, Robert “Bob” Onkels; nephew and niece, Donald Onkels and Diane Dontje; and other relatives.

Jane will be laid to rest in Union Cemetery in Kaukauna beside her husband, Ralph, and son, Robert with a graveside committal service held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2020 with Rev. Dr. Matthew R. Knapp, Sr., of Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church, officiating.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay.

Following local health guidelines, those attending the visitation and/or graveside service are to wear face masks and maintain social distancing.

Memorials may be given in her honor to Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church.
