Obituary: Jane Marie Holen

Aug. 28, 1930 – June 5, 2024

Jane Marie Holen, 93, lifelong Sturgeon Bay resident, died June 5, 2024, at Brookview Meadows in Green Bay where she resided since Nov. 2022. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Sturgeon Bay, to the late Merle and Frieda (Zastrow) Anderson. She graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1948 and attended Lab Technician school in Minneapolis. In 1953 she married Glenn Holen at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Being an only child, she was blessed to be welcomed into Glenn’s large and loving family.

She was a past volunteer with Door County Hospital Auxiliary where she served as a Pink Lady in the lab, and at the House and Garden Walks. She had a strong Christian faith and was a lifetime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran, where she served on Altar Guild and funeral dinners. She also enjoyed cross-country skiing, needlework, and gardening.

Jane golfed for many years in the Leathem Smith Ladies League where she often took Low Putts. She also played bridge for decades in her Monday night bridge club. She and Glenn enjoyed traveling with relatives or friends to various destinations around the country.

Jane’s first priority was her family. She cherished every minute spent with family, especially her two granddaughters, taking them on trips to Wisconsin Dells and Gulf Shores, and attending their recitals and events. She was always willing to help out at the drop of a hat when needed. She was also lucky to have a group of close, longtime friends to share trips, cards, coffee, and life in general.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jeff Vander Zanden, Green Bay; two granddaughters, Lisa Vander Zanden, Green Bay; and Krista and Jon Hepner, Madison; great-grandson, Grant Hepner; sister-in-law, Geneva Eggers; and all of Glenn’s nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, in 2007; brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Harlen Holen, Ted (Betty) Holen, Carolyn (Tom) Kunkel, Yvonne (Don) Schroeder, and Larry Eggers; dear friends Margi and Gail.

There will be a private graveside service led by Rev. Joel Sauer. Memorials can be made in Jane’s name to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Forbes Funeral Home is assisting the family. On-line condolences may be offered at forbesfuneralhome.com

We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Brookview Meadows for their loving care the past 1.5 years. Many Thanks also to Unity Hospice for their help and guidance, and Pastors Sauer and Schroeder for their visits.
