Obituary: Jane Mary (Meunier) Brauer

March 23, 1928 ~ January 31, 2022

Jane Mary Brauer died January 31, 2022, at the age of 93. She passed away peacefully at Door County Medical Center with her daughter by her side.

She was born March 23, 1928 in Gillett, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Charles and Clara (Vandermause) Meunier. As a teenager, Jane played on the very first women’s softball team in Sturgeon Bay. She also worked as a clerk at Worley’s Grocery, where she met the love of her life, Elroy Brauer. The two were wed on October 6, 1948 at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Maplewood. They spent the first five years of their marriage in Venezuela. After returning to Sturgeon Bay in 1953, they purchased the Service Cab business, which they operated together for six years. Their next endeavor was the purchase of a farm where they spent the next 30 years of their lives. They retired to Krohns Lake in Algoma in the early 90s. After Elroy’s passing, Jane moved back to Sturgeon Bay in 2005 to be closer to family.

Jane was a devout Catholic and attended Mass weekly. She enjoyed snowmobiling and taking motorcycle rides on Elroy’s Harley. Jane spent many hours playing games with her grandchildren, working puzzles and tending to her flower gardens. Her grandchildren will tell you that it was impossible to beat her at Yahtzee. Jane’s greatest love was her family. Always there to listen, comfort and help. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Jane will be missed by her daughter, Barb Colombo of Sturgeon Bay; son-in-law, Bill Marin of Maplewood; grandchildren, Chris (Kari) Colombo of Appleton, Amanda (Tim) Hoger of Neenah, Lora (fiancée, Kurt Krueger) Jorgensen of Forestville, and Jon (Kristen) Marin of Appleton; great-grandchildren, Abigail Jorgensen, Ellie and Chloe Colombo, Ava and Aubrey Hoger, and Caroline Marin; sister, Claire Bosman; sister-in-law, Carol Meunier; and several nieces, nephews, and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Clara Meunier; husband, Elroy Brauer; siblings, Lloyd (Mary) Meunier, Muriel (Gilbert) Lealou, Pearl (Leonard) Kerscher, Patricia (Gary) Gilson, Charles Meunier; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Darrell Bosman, Roger (Margie) Brauer, LaVerne (Paul) Hustad, and Merlin Brauer.

Jane’s life will be celebrated during a private Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Maplewood with Fr. Anthony Birdsall officiating. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery beside Elroy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Jane’s name to Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Maplewood or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Jane’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Door County Medical Center and Unity Hospice for the compassionate care Jane received in her final days.
