Obituary: Jean Jeanette Bahlert

Feb. 7, 1939 – Nov. 19, 2019

Jean Jeanette Bahlert, 80, formerly of the Town of Sevastopol, died at Sturgeon Bay Health Services.

She was born in Sturgeon Bay, the daughter of Arthur Emil Becker and Bertha Elvira (Ohnesorge) Becker.

Jean grew up attending Liberty Grade School and was confirmed at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Town of Liberty Grove. She graduated from Gibraltar High School with the Class of 1956 and went on to study at the Wisconsin College of Cosmetology in Green Bay.

Jean initially worked for Irene’s Beauty Shop in Sister Bay during the summer for 20 years. On January 20, 1962, she was united in marriage to Roger Charles Bahlert at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Baileys Harbor. Together, they were blessed with more than 57 years of marriage. Roger and Jean resided in the Town of Sevastopol on Highway 57.

Jean helped with almost everything at home with the exception of anything mechanical or needing gas; that was Roger’s responsibility. She worked part time at (her cousin’s) Dolores’ Beauty Shop in Fish Creek. Jean also worked in the gift shop at The Farm on Highway 57, just down from her home. Her last employment was with Sevastopol School as a cook in the cafeteria for 24 years.

Jean was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. She had a quiet, but strong faith and always made it to church.

Jean liked oil painting, especially horse and boat scenes. She loved to sew clothes, curtains and dolls. Jean was an excellent baker, cook and canner. Saturday-night steak dinners were always served with an old fashioned or two. She would even fire up the grill for steak in the middle of winter. Jean’s canned pickles were definitely a family favorite. She also enjoyed tending to her garden, listening to Elvis and other country music, and dancing, especially the polka. Jean loved her cats over the years, but above all, she loved her family.

She will be missed by her husband, Roger; daughter, Lisa Englebert of Sturgeon Bay; former son-in-law, Chad Englebert of Appleton; sister-in-law, Terri (Ron) Wagner of the Town of Egg Harbor; other relatives; and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Susan (Wayne) Jarman.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 11 am, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, with Pastor Carl Schroeder officiating. Jean will be laid to rest in Little Sister Cemetery in the Town of Liberty Grove.

Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 4-7 pm, at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay, with a devotion to conclude the evening at 7 pm. Visitation will continue Nov. 30, 10-10:50 am, at the church.

Memorials may be given in Jean’s name to St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church or School or a charity of your choice.

“Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the Sturgeon Bay Health Services staff for your care given to Jean over the years.”
