Obituary: Jeanne Linda (Erickson) Barnard

March 22, 1951 ~ August 21, 2022

Jeanne Linda Barnard, 71, of Sturgeon Bay, died peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2022 surrounded by her family at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Facility after a year of valiantly battling brain cancer.

She was born March 22, 1951, in Sturgeon Bay, the daughter of the late Howard Richard and Helen Jane (Schuyler) Erickson. After Helen’s passing in 1954, Howard married Miriam May (Eckert) Erickson, and together they raised Jeanne and, in the years to follow, her four sisters. Jeanne graduated from Gibraltar High School as a proud member of the Class of 1969 and continued her education at Carroll College, where she graduated in 1972 with her bachelor’s degree in education. She received her master’s degree in education from Viterbo University. Jeanne was a teacher for 37 years, a lifelong career that was the pride and love of her professional life.  She began as a first-grade teacher in the Sevastopol School District; moved her talents to the kindergarten classroom in Sturgeon Bay at West Side School and Sunset School, where she sang to, taught and loved children until her retirement in 2018. During retirement, Jeanne was a substitute teacher and continued greeting happy guests at the front desk of the Erickson and Dickson family resort, The Shallows, in Egg Harbor, where she made visitors feel at home for 50 summers.

On June 22, 1974, Jeanne and Robert Henry Barnard were united in marriage at the Erickson home in Juddville. They were members of the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church, where Jeanne sang in the choir. She loved to volunteer for the church Missions Committee, Altrusa Club, Peninsula Singers, Choraliers, Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula Players, Birch Creek, and Relay for Life (among others). Jeanne was a seasoned musician and could play piano, clarinet, and guitar and had a passion for singing.

Jeanne will be missed by her loving husband of 48 years, Bob; children, Ann (Bryan) Birnschein and Andrew (Becky) Barnard; grandson, Ray Birnschein; mother, Miriam Erickson; four sisters, Liz (Bob) Dickson, Michele (John) Packett, MyChi Erickson, and Soledad (Matthew Mikkelsen) Erickson; siblings-in-law, William (Jeanne) Barnard, James Barnard, Thomas (Branch) Barnard, Kathy (Bob) Zimmerman, Carl (Christine) Barnard, Mariellen Haen, David Hamilton, and Sylvia Carpenter; plus many nieces, nephews, and cousins around the globe. Additionally, Jeanne will be missed by the children she taught, the high school and college classmates whose friendships she kept, and the countless friends she held dear as she moved with joy through her life on earth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Helen Erickson; siblings-in-law, Margaret Hamilton, Douglas Barnard, Tony Haen, and David Barnard; cousins Robbie Erickson and Thomas Schuyler, and nephews, Kevin Barnard and Tyrone Packett.

Jeanne’s life will be honored with a memorial service on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church (836 Michigan St, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235). She will be laid to rest in Peninsula State Park’s Blossomberg Cemetery in Fish Creek.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Jeanne’s name to Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church Missions Committee, United Way of Door County, Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula Singers, Door CANcer, Kim’s Hope, or Cycling Without Age Door County.
