Obituary: June Joanne Hartel

June Joanne Hartel, 80, of Sturgeon Bay, was called Home to be with the Lord, Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2017 at Algoma Long Term Care with her family at her side. June and her family had dealt with her Alzheimer’s disease for over 17 years.

She was born June 21, 1936 at Seul Choix Lighthouse in Manistique, MI, the daughter of William Ludwig Hanson and Lena Emma (Nieman) Hanson. [William was the lighthouse keeper there.] June graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1955. On April 19, 1958, She was united in marriage to Albert “Al” Frank Hartel at St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. June raised her children and waitressed for local restaurants before working at Emerson Electric in Sturgeon Bay until she retired. She and Al were blessed with over 47 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2005.

June was a member of Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. She had been a member at Tanum-Forest Lutheran Church in Vignes where she taught Sunday School and was a part of the Ladies Aid Seekers Circle. June enjoyed shopping (lots of shopping), traveling, reading, sewing, but especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren when they were younger and growing up.

Her love will live on in the hearts of her three children, Rebecca “Becky” (Mark) Nei, William “Bill” (Robin) Hartel, both of Sturgeon Bay, and Paula (Cliff) Story of Mesa, AZ; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Tia, and Jeremiah Nei, Zachary and Quinn Hartel, and Randy, Timothy, and Tracy Story; sister, Luella Viste of Algoma; and ten siblings-in-law, Georgiann Hanson, Mary Ann Hanson, Ruth Hanson, Mary Hartel, Clara Vogel, Harry Hartel, Irene (Don) McKnight, Roger (Marvel) Hartel, Rosemarie (Robert) Smith, and Jim (Colleen) Hartel.

June was welcomed Home by her parents; husband; twin sons, James Daniel and Daniel James; sister, Sylvia; five brothers, Willard, Harvey, Allen, James, and Floyd; siblings-in-law, Margaret Hanson, Lawrence Viste, Andy Hartel, Doris (Mike) Duerst, Rita (Art) Mitchell, Rose Hartel, and Kathleen Hartel; and nephew, Gary Viste.

Her life will be honored with a funeral service held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay with Pastor Tim Malek officiating. June will be laid to rest beside her husband, Al, in Bayside Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Huehns Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and at the church, Monday morning, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials may be given in June’s memory for Bay View Lutheran Church or Unity Hospice.
